The Oldest Animals to Ever Exist

The only downside to having a pet is that they probably won’t live as long as you. It’s never any fun to attend a funeral, even if it’s for your furry friend. However, there are some animals out there that have lived much longer than anyone would’ve expected them to. If you can’t stand the thought of your doggie or kitty dying, then there’s actually hope, because they might end up outliving you. If you don’t think it’s possible, here are some of the oldest animals in the world:

Corduroy

The oldest cat who is currently alive lives in Oregon. His name is Corduroy and he’s 26 years old. However, he’s not the oldest cat to ever exist. There was another feline, named Tiffany Two, who lived to be 27. After she passed away recently, the title of “world’s oldest cat” was passed down to Corduroy.

Bluey

Bluey was an Australian Cattle Dog who worked with sheep for his entire life. Although he passed away back in 1939, he still holds the record for being the canine that lived the longest. After all, he was born in 1910, which means he was 29 years old when he died.

Jonathan

If you think that some dogs and cats have long lifespans, wait until you see Jonathan the tortoise. As of this year, he is at least 183 years old. That means it’s speculated he was born all the way back in 1832, if not earlier. Not only is he the oldest turtle around, he’s also the oldest living land animal on the planet.

Big Bertha

Big Bertha holds the title of the oldest cow in the world in the Guinness Book of World Records. She died in 1993 at the age of 49. Not only did she live a long life, she also bred a record number of calves. Even though cows typically only have one baby at a time, Big Bertha had 39 of them over the course of her long life.

Fred and George

Most parents buy their children goldfish because they don’t expect them to be a long-term commitment. However, there are goldfish that live much longer than any pet owner would expect. The two oldest goldfish in the world are both 40 years old. A couple won Fred and George at a fair in 1975, and they’ve had them ever since.

Shayne

The average lifespan of a horse is around 25 to 33 years. However, some of them live even longer than that. Shayne was an Irish Draught who lived to be 51 years old, which is equivalent to 120 in human years. He ate four meals a day and had cabbage for treats, which kept him healthy until his final days.

Jellyfish and Lobsters

Sea creatures have bizarre lifespans. There is a lobster named George who is believed to be around 140 years old. Meanwhile, jellyfish exist that can theoretically live forever. That means they have probably outlived our ancestors and will likely outlive us as well.
