The Street Art is Strong in Portland

Street art is a type of art done in a public venue that is typically unsanctioned. While there are some vandals who will grab a can of spray paint to write random words across buildings just for the fun of it, there are also actual artists who put in a lot of effort to decorate their towns. After all, art doesn’t have to be on a canvas in order for it to be considered beautiful. Here are some of the craziest pieces of street art in Portland that are just as magnificent as the art you’d see in a museum.

A Creative Collage

This is the perfect example of Portland street art; there are so many little details in this piece that require attention. Even though it looks beautiful at first glance, you’ll be even more impressed the longer you look at it, because you’ll start to see all of the tiny things the artist added.

Birds in Flight

Most street art aims to make a statement without offending anyone, and this is the perfect example. At first glance, the picture looks sweet and innocent, because your eyes are drawn to the beautiful birds. However, if you look at it for a little longer, you’ll notice the man holding his hand out to the animals has his limbs sliced open and off. Suddenly, that innocent scene seems a lot darker.

The Biker

Drawing is like riding a bike, because you never forget how to do it. The more you draw and paint, the better you’ll get at the activity. Whoever created this piece of art must’ve spent hours perfecting their craft, It’s not easy to create something so special or detailed, especially at such a large scale.

Cartoon Mural

The bright colors and adorable designs of this piece appeal to both children and adults. Again, look at it long enough and you’ll start to see the weirdness underneath the whimsy—check out that blue guy with drills coming out of his eye sockets, or the creepy man in the corner with the yellow glasses. Still pleasing and attention grabbing—but also pretty strange!

A Perfect Portrait

On the opposite end of the spectrum, street art can be incredibly realistic too. There are some artists who create portraits that look absolutely lifelike. The art on this building could be mistaken for an actual photograph if it was placed on a different surface, don’t you think? We’re expecting those eyes to turn toward us any minute now…

An Intricate Woman

If you don’t think it takes talent to create street art, this piece will change your mind. There are dozens of intricate parts to this design, which means it must have taken hours to complete. And it would take just as long to dissect every little detail—from the interaction of shapes and colors to the amazing sense of motion in the artwork. She looks like she’s about to come to life! All of the time spent on this mural was well worth it, because the piece ended up completely stunning.

Beautiful Rain

Though there are some pieces of street art that are meant to unnerve you, there are definitely some that are meant to brighten your day. This piece, for instance, will turn any dreary day into a sunny one. How could you stay upset when there are beautiful sunflowers, a butterfly, and a frog telling you to turn that frown upside down?

The Struggle Is Real

Art is always up for interpretation, and it’s clear this piece is meant to make you think. The words and designs may seem thrown on carelessly like random decals, but they weren’t. The artist’s intent, although certainly present, isn’t always obvious. We can say and believe that all of those objects were purposely placed, but art is not a test, and there’s no answer key. It’s up to you to decide what it all represents.

What’s the coolest piece of street art you’ve ever seen?
