It seems that nearly everything now has a day set aside for it, from hot dogs to French fries and from paper bags to simplicity. In fact, at least one website has been set up specifically to catalog all of these different national days. Perhaps one of the coolest and most rewarding national days though is National Mutt Day.
Started in 2005 by animal expert and advocate Colleen Paige, National Mutt Day is celebrated twice each year. The day falls on July 31 and December 2 in 2016. National Mutt Day seeks to celebrate and hopefully save mixed breed dogs across the country. The goal for 2016 is to rescue at least 10,000 mixed-breed dogs from shelters.
People who are able to adopt a dog are encouraged to do so to celebrate the day. Those who cannot adopt a mutt are asked to consider making a donation to a local animal shelter or volunteering to care for a dog at their local shelter. In other words, everyone can participate in National Mutt Day and make a difference for an otherwise unwanted dog. This makes National Mutt Day a pretty cool day all around.
Mixed-breed dogs, or mutts, are often passed over in favor of pure-bred dogs when people think about a new pet. The irony though is that mutts often make better pets than pure-bred dogs, and are often healthier and live longer. In addition, mutts can be trained just as well as pure-bred dogs. There is really no good reason not to adopt an unwanted mutt from a shelter instead of paying hundreds or thousands of dollars for a pure-bred.
In honor of National Mutt Day, here are a few of the craziest and cutest looking dogs to ever be photographed for the Internet.
