Portland is nothing if not weird. The strange culture that reaches throughout Portland has spawned the slogan “Keep Portland Weird,” and inspired shows like Portlandia, which portrays some of the oddities you might find in your adventures through the city. Combining this already-colorful culture with the legalization of marijuana was sure to yield some fun results. If you live in the city, you are likely regularly amused. Either way, you never know what you are going to find.
In November of 2014, residents of Oregon voted to pass recreational marijuana usage. Though the official start date for this recreational use was not scheduled until January 2016, medical dispensaries were allowed to get a head start by expanding their licenses to include general sales. On July 1, 2015, medical marijuana become legal all around the state and people lined up at their local dispensaries to get their hands on some of the finest green they had ever smoked.
Naturally, legalization hit Portland hard and was celebrated almost immediately by an event called “Weed the People.” At this local gathering (where advance tickets cost only $40), attendees were able to get their hand on free weed, as well as free seeds to grow more. In addition to these free items, they were able to test out vaporizers, purchase snacks, participate in special events, and the first 1,000 guests received some extra goods. It was undoubtedly a great time for everyone.
Apparently, another side effect of the legalization of marijuana is that pugs are now roaming the streets of Portland, behaving like humans. We can only speculate as to whether this dog smoked its own bowl or whether its own just decided to dress up and go run about town. Either way, it can be safely assumed that you won’t find this anywhere else around the country, even in other places where weed is legal.
Of course, one of the biggest changes in Portland (and likely all around Oregon) that you are going to see is the appearance of many “Cannabis Cafes.” Among those location, the World Famous Cannabis Cafe is already open for business in the city. Rest assured, this will not be the last place to pop up like this; so if it’s not in your neighborhood, you can expect something closer to home.
